Our gem of a park

In Windsor Park, the green city block between 5th/6th Streets & 52nd/53rd Avenues is one of the most used park spaces in the neighbourhood. And with the population density increasing, the demands on this space are only going up.

That’s why we want to create a continuing vision for the area, increasing beauty, flexible use and sustainability for the long term.

In 2025, the Windsor Park Gardening and Beautification Committee started canvasing community residents for ideas around what they would like to see in the park, and in January 2026 we received the Stella Grant through the Calgary Parks Foundation to hire a landscape architect.

Raspberries!

We’re putting in a new public raspberry patch along the south wall of the Windsor Park community hall (6 Street & 53 Avenue). If you read this in time, come out Saturday, May 23 between 11 and 2 p.m. to help plant.

The raspberries will be a fun addition to our playground area, introducing children and families to the joys of gardening and providing a tasty snack. We hope they’ll also get people talking and excited for the next projects.

If the raspberries are fruiting, help yourself. Enjoy a snack while you’re at the park and please save some for the next person.

Flower-box bench

Another hotly requested item during our initial community conversations was a bench. So we built one. This spring, we plan to install it on the east side of the tennis courts near the large poplar trees.

The bench will have a QR code pointing people back to this website for information, and two integrated planter boxes. Already one of our volunteers has stepped up to plant and care for the flowers. We hope you enjoy a quiet place to sit.

How to get involved

This is a long-term project to improve the green space bit by bit, creating a beautiful and welcoming space for all. We genuinely believe that in order for a project like this to be sustainable, we need community buy-in. That means we need your voice, your ideas, your caution and your creativity.

What about garden boxes?

This group started with the idea of creating a community garden. That dream has not died. Right now there are two options for gardens in our area.

The first is just south of 58th Avenue. The City of Calgary is creating a new stormwater drypond and has said it intends to include a community garden. They propose to have a joint committee of Meadowlark and Windsor Park volunteers organize and manage it once construction is complete. The latest news on the city’s website is that construction is expected to start in 2027.

The second opportunity is under the powerlines on 50th Avenue, beside Living Spirit Church. It’s a lot of land, there is access to water, and the work to create an agreement with ATCO to use the land is already complete.

One of the Living Spirit church members had a vision for a reflective labyrinth, and we helped him create that with donated rocks in 2025. They would love for someone to add a garden, and there has been some interest from residents in Elboya. But our group has decided that we currently don’t have the capacity to lead this.
